 Course Objectives

The main goal of this course is to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the multiple operating systems commonly found in the Information Technology field today. You will learn the theory behind operating systems and some basic to advanced components of each operating system. This course walks you through current hardware and how it interacts with operating systems. You will learn basic functions and design of file systems found in Windows, UNIX, and Macintosh operating systems. This course discusses how operating systems interface with input, output, and storage devices. You will learn basic network theory and how to setup network resources through the multiple versions of software. There are many hands-on projects and case projects that provide you with real experience in supporting multiple operating systems.

 E-Mail/WebCT

All students are requested to obtain an e-mail account. The school provides you with an email account. If you have any questions about the course or need assistance, please contact me in person or by email any time. The entire course is conducted online via WebCT. I will respond more quickly through the WebCT email utility that you find on your desktop.

 Grading and Evaluation Criteria

  • 50% of the grade is based on a midterm and a final examination. Both examinations are cumulative and will be given in a multiple choice. I will average these two exams and multiply them by .50 to get your exam score. These are taken on your computer and they will be timed.

  • 25% of the grade is based on completing the lab assignments found in the LabSim Disk. I will take the average of all these scores and multiply them by .25 to give you the grade you will earn. You may take these as often as you like in order to increase your score. I will take the highest grade as the final grade for that lab module.

  • 25% of the grade is based on quizzes. Quizzes are all online. There are 10 quizzes that are self grading and I will take the average at the end of the term and multiply them by .25 to get your final score. You will get two chances to improve your grade and I will take your highest score.

Important: All email communication must be done exclusively on the desktop email utility.
