Types of Graphics Software

There are numerous graphic software programs available on the market today. Prices and capabilities vary greatly.

Graphic software is typically designed for either the manipulation of either RASTER or VECTOR images, although many software packages now handle both raster and vector images.

Raster Graphics that are resolution dependant and can loose detail when altered. Raster graphics are composed of small squares known as pixels. Raster graphics are good at reproducing subtle graduations of color, as in photographs. Ex. GIF, JPG, TIF

Vector Graphics that can be moved, resized, or changed without loosing the quality of the graphic. Vectors are defined according to their geometric characteristics. Vector graphics are best utilized for graphics that must have crisp outlines such as text or logos. Ex. EPS, AI, CDR
