System Issues

The Web owes its origins to many people, starting back in medieval times with the development of a rich system of cross references and marginalia. The basic document model for the Web was set: things in the page such as the text and graphics, and cross references to other works. These early hypertext links were able to able to target documents to a fine level thanks to conventions for numbering lines or verses.

Files are uploaded to the ACCD Web Server using a the File Transport Protocol or FTP. One program that enables you to use a graphical user interface for transferring files is WS_FTP by Ipswitch. In order to upload files to a specific directory certain criteria need to be entered into the Session Properties, illustrated below. This information tells the program who you are, your password, and where the local and remotes files are located.

In order to make a Web site available to visitors the domain name must be registered. In order to obtain a domain name you must follow certain procedures. You must register your domain name from The Accredited Registrar Directory (ICANN). You can obtain a domain from an accredited domain name registrar such as Network Solutions. The domain name, which uniquely identifies your site, is accessed by the Internet Protocol Address (IP) which must be pointed at your site's Web host. The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) tells the web browser on which server to locate the Web page.

You can purchase a domain name and have it registered with ICANN. The domain name <ACCD.EDU> is registered with ICANN and can only be used by the District at Alamo Community College District. The file name extension <.EDU> refers to an institution of higher learning.

Web page owners should check their pages regularly to make sure links are operational and the information is up-to-date. The entire Web site will be reviewed for currency and accuracy of links each quarter by the Electronic Publishing Council of the ACCD. Every page will be checked for the date of last revision, continuance of the person indicated as being responsible for the page, and continued existance of imbedded links. Discrepancies will be noted to the Web page owner for correction.
