ACCOUNTING INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

This internship program is set up to give each student on-the-job experience in an accounting-related field.

The first requirement for the internship coordinator each semester is to help the students find suitable employment.  The internship coordinator works with the students to locate suitable work sites.  Some of these positions are paid positions and some are not; it depends on each work site.

The department is currently compiling information for a database that will be helpful in keeping track of employers that have been a part of the internship program in past years.

After each student is placed in a position and the semester has begun, the student takes the Letter of Agreement to the employer for their signature.  This letter of agreement and other necessary forms are on the course web site Home Page .  The student will be able to download and save the various forms on a disk.  The student also takes the St. Philip’s College Catalog to work on that first day so the employer will know what courses the student must successfully complete in the appropriate degree plan.  Another item the student takes is the current St. Philip’s College Class Schedule.  This provides information to the employer in order to help the employer learn more about what classes are being offered at St. Philip's College.

The student also downloads and delivers the internship course Syllabus to the supervisor.  In this way, the supervisor knows exactly what is expected of the student during the internship course.

Each week the student also prepares a Weekly Work Report noting what tasks were performed and how much time each day was spent at the work site.  The supervisor then signs off on each weekly work report to verify its content.

The student downloads the Midterm, and Final Evaluation forms from the internship web site and takes the evaluations to the work-site supervisor when appropriate.  At both the midterm and at the end of the semester, the employer submits an evaluation to the internship coordinator with a number grade to indicate performance status.

At some time during the semester, the internship coordinator makes an on-site visit with the student and their supervisor to review the student's work, and to receive feedback from the employer concerning the internship program.  If an on-site visit is not practical, then the internship coordinator will contact the student’s employer via telephone to gather such information.

Overall, this is a beneficial experience for all parties involved.  The student has an opportunity to put education to work, the employer has an opportunity to work with the students to mould their work ethic and inspire high performance expectations, and the college has an opportunity to showcase the quality of education that the students are receiving in the Business Information Solutions Department.
